DIEP

~ The purpose of life is a life of purpose~

DEFINE

Defining our own success could possibly make us clear about what we actually desire to pursue in our lives. "What I want to achieve in life?"I asked this question to myself not less than a hundred times, but every time I went through each phase of my life the answer would change.  It's really hard to fix a definite answer to my question; however I hope my life goal at the moment is permanent and my destiny.

My life goal is to become a successful doctor. What is success meant to me?

Doctor for me is a job who serves the community and takes the maintenance of public health as my responsibility BUT at the same time do not neglect my own personal life. I have heard some of the cases where the doctors are too committed to the hospital until they tend to neglect their own family. For me both career and family are equally important, and I must strike a balance between both parties.

I imagine myself to become a specialist doctor by the time I am 40 years old. After getting specialist qualification I may put myself into research field and publish my own discoveries in medical field.(if possible I would like to get Noble prize!!XD) And for the family side I wish my family will be in peace and my spouse and I could educate my children to possess developed IQ and EQ.

INTERPRET

Becoming a doctor is not an easy task; it must requires skills, sheer determination, perseverance and lifelong learning in order to achieve the peak in my career. Intense training and harsh scolding are what a doctor must go through. Long working hour, in my own opinion, is the toughest part for the job. It sometimes can go up to 18 hours per day or even longer. Not only that, doctor also carries risk of being infected by the patients like HIV disease.

Having said that, the largest part of me choosing doctor as my life goal is that helping others could give me great satisfaction in my life. And being down-to-earth, doctor is a profession and possess high social status. Finding job will also be a lot easier in medical field considering the skills I obtained after graduated and the increasing number of population.

EVALUATE

It is not impossible to achieve my goal. I have my own strength which is the perseverance and passion in medical field. If I successfully sharpen these skills, they will become my stepping stone.

At the same time, there are a few weakness I should overcome. One of these is my presentation skills that play vital role after stepping into the world. Next is my analysis skill. I must improve it to capture every single detail especially during diagnosis of patient illness in the future. A minor wrong judgement can lead to fatal mistake. And fast action is what I possess to deal with emergencies.

PLAN

First, I should get good results in A-level, and apply for scholarship to either study in local or overseas. Involved myself in more extracurricular activities could enhance my interpersonal and analytic skills.  My mind would become more mature and could think of different perspectives especially when I were to plan an event.

When I enter university, this is what my plan goes-- study ahead on anatomy and physiology which are the foundation for medical and I would emphasize more on application of theory in practical.
This definitely will give me better understanding on what I will be studying on.

After I graduate, pass my housemanship and officially become a doctor, I will enter specialized field as quick as possible. Then I plan to go into research and publish my work to raise my fame at global scale(HAHA IF I MANAGE TO DO IT IN THE FUTURE!!)

This is my DIEP on my personal life goal.

What matters me is not money and fame actually, it is what I could do to the society and left behind after my death. No matter is new treatment for certain diseases or just my spirit for the next generation to fight again.

I wish my goal and dream would come true.

Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.

And I will overtake yesterday version of myself, and become a better me.Keep moving, until our goal is reached.

We only live once.

Reflection

Taylor's Graduates Capabilities (TGC) gives me an insight on eight essence qualities the modern era wants and the their importance. For me, lifelong learning and problem solving skills are of fundamental abilities that I must possess. Effective solutions therefore can come up in my mind and lead to win-win situation. Apart from problem solving, interpersonal skills as well play an important role in my life. It could ensure healthy social circle and capture of latest information in various field. I believe I lack of this quality, and TGC makes me realize it is time for me to change myself to a better one.

Smart Goal explicitly explained the criteria of goal setting which are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. It clarifies my thoughts and allows me to set clear and unambiguous goal. After this I am more certain of my own personal mission, and I could put myself towards it. That's for long-term goal. And for short-term one I want to get all A* in A-level to become a milestone into the university of my choice.

Learning style test basically gives me an idea of what learning style category I am in, and I find out  that I am a tactile, auditory and visual learner. It's quite balancing XD. Sometimes my way of study will come to a dead end, and this test provides me a breakthrough in my learning style by giving me advice to overcome various difficulties in study. So I hope this will also motivate me towards lifelong learning. ( Brain will degenerate if I didn't use it)

SWOT analysis did help me to evaluate my own strength, weakness, opportunity and threats I will be encountering in the future. I know my strength and weakness and I should compensate between the both parties.

Then comes to personality test. I don't even know our character can be divided into 16 groups before the test!!!  I am INTJ, and this means that I am an introverted person but at the same time being judgmental. I shall open myself more towards others to widen my friendships.

As for career test, I found out that I suit best in medicine line field, and my effort should go towards that. I believe my interest will give me great motivation and support for me to go extra mile.

Oh I almost forget about my biodata!! Biodata allows me view myself from different perspective, discovering the unknown part of myself. "How I see myself?" is a good question not only for me but for all of us. High self esteem, in my own perception, is an element that could bring us success and happiness. As for me, how I view myself change my thinking, and thinking affects my action. I was convinced that the more I understand myself the more mature I become.

Improve and not to doubt myself.

Nothing in the world is ever completely wrong. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Nothing wrong in being weak for a moment when you are willing to motivate yourself to learn.

Career Test Result and Reflection

This truly reflects my personality type. I am an introvert as I actually prefer to work alone but when I encounter difficulties I would turn to my friend and seek for advice. Sometimes I failed to understand the importance of a context what I will do is just read through without any thought on them. And I see myself as a persevere person because I motivate myself to complete what is in my mind. My dream is to become a doctor and I believe the personality of INTJ would drive me through a greater length.

SWOT

A SWOT analysis (alternatively SWOT matrix) is a structured planning method used to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in a project or in a business venture. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a product, place, industry or person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Some authors credit SWOT to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies. However, Humphrey himself does not claim the creation of SWOT, and the origins remain obscure. The degree to which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept of strategic fit.

Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others.
Weaknesses: characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage relative to others.
Opportunities: elements that the project could exploit to its advantage.
Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project.

Personality test

My learning style

Learning Styles — The General Categories
Learning styles are ways of learning. A preferred learning style is the way in which a student learns best, which reflects the relative strengths or weaknesses of that student’s underling cognitive (learning) skills. Different scholars use different learning style categories. Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory maintains that there are at least seven learning styles (“intelligences”): interpersonal, intra-personal, body/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, logical/mathematical, verbal/linguistic, and musical/rhythmic (D. Lazear, 1991). Some academic organizations trim this list to a basic two: logical/mathematical and verbal/linguistic. For purposes of this article and in accordance with the majority of today’s educational literature, we’ll focus on the following simplified list of three learning styles: Auditory, Visual, and Tactile.

Learning Styles — A Simplified List

Auditory — A student with an auditory learning style learns best when information is delivered in auditory formats such as lectures, discussions, oral readings, audio recordings, or podcasts. Auditory learners do well in classroom settings where professor lectures and student discussions are the norm. These students also do well with taped courses and group study situations.

Visual — A student with a visual learning style learns best when information is presented in visual formats such as books, articles, web pages, images, videos, or diagrams. Visual learners do well with class handouts, power point presentations, movies, and chalkboards. These students take detailed notes, highlight their texts, and use flow charts for study aids.
Tactile — A student with a tactile learning style learns best when information is conveyed in “hands-on” settings such as trade positions, labs, workshops, or participatory classes. Tactile learners respond well to touching and creating things in areas such as art and science. These students want to hold and manipulate the subject matter, rather than merely viewing an image of it.
Learning Styles — The Importance of Cognitive Assessment
Learning styles should be discovered and encouraged. It’s the way we’re “wired” and we’re always more successful in life when we pursue our natural wiring. However, although learning styles are important, working within a student’s learning strengths too early may actually hinder the child’s overall success. If a child is encouraged to avoid areas of struggle, the underlying cognitive skills in that area will remain weak and that child may lose the opportunity to fully develop an array of learning tools. Regardless of whether they’ll ultimately favor the auditory, visual, or tactile styles, all students need a strong foundation in the core cognitive skills.

Cognitive skills are the fundamental tools that all people use to learn and achieve. Cognitive skills are not the learning style preferences such as auditory, visual or tactile, but rather, the underlying mental abilities required for long-term proficiency in core subjects such as reading, writing, and mathematics. These foundational learning skills include auditory processing, visual processing, attention, memory, processing speed, logic and reasoning, and comprehension. All of these mental tools should be solid for learning success, but it’s the strongest of these underlying abilities that leads to a preference in learning styles.

At LearningRx, an assessment of basic cognitive skills is the first step towards discovering a student’s preferred learning style. A “Learning Styles Inventory” is an exciting part of our assessment process. If your child is struggling in an area of learning, we encourage you to learn more about our cognitive skills and learning styles assessments.

What's Your Learning Style? The Results

Your Scores:
  • Auditory: 30%
  • Visual: 30%
  • Tactile: 40%
You are a Tactile learner! Check out the information below, or view all of the learning styles.

Tactile

If you are a tactile learner, you learn by touching and doing. You understand and remember things through physical movement. You are a "hands-on" learner who prefers to touch, move, build, or draw what you learn, and you tend to learn better when some type of physical activity is involved. You need to be active and take frequent breaks, you often speak with your hands and with gestures, and you may have difficulty sitting still.
As a tactile learner, you like to take things apart and put things together, and you tend to find reasons to tinker or move around when you become bored. You may be very well coordinated and have good athletic ability. You can easily remember things that were done but may have difficulty remembering what you saw or heard in the process. You often communicate by touching, and you appreciate physically expressed forms of encouragement, such as a pat on the back.
Here are some things that tactile learners like you can do to learn better:
  • Participate in activities that involve touching, building, moving, or drawing.
  • Do lots of hands-on activities like completing art projects, taking walks, or acting out stories.
  • It's OK to chew gum, walk around, or rock in a chair while reading or studying.
  • Use flashcards and arrange them in groups to show relationships between ideas.
  • Trace words with your finger to learn spelling (finger spelling).
  • Take frequent breaks during reading or studying periods (frequent, but not long).
  • It's OK to tap a pencil, shake your foot, or hold on to something while learning.
  • Use a computer to reinforce learning through the sense of touch.
Remember that you learn best by doing, not just by reading, seeing, or hearing.

Reflection
Before I discover my learning style is tactile, I just study by swallowing the whole book down my throat. Now I should do more activities that stimulate my senses like touching and drawing. This would create vivid memory and I believe it could make my study more efficient.

Biodata

Not enough sleep is how every single people I met describes me. I have deep dark eye circles that superficially reflects me I am lacking of rest. But truth is often not what we just see. I sleep for 7 hours every day.

I am Tan Shang Yi. I am from Kuala Lumpur and currently taking A-level 18months programme at TCSJ. What I usually do when I am free is that I play basketball and swimming. It really does unwind me from stressful studying process. When I wake up the next morning my whole body will be fully energetic again to happily welcome the day of my life.

I often dream of being the cream de la cream in every single aspect, and I hope my dream would finally come true.

18 years of experience just cannot transform into words. This is just a brief description about myself.

Top 15 Goal Setting Quotes!

…And the importance of aiming before taking flight.

Give a man a bow and arrow and tell him to, “SHOOT!” and his first response would be, “At what?”  When there is no target there is no purpose for shooting.  He could shoot the arrow anywhere and wherever the arrow ended up would be where the arrow ended up.  Not much to it.
On the other hand, if you gave the archer a target and challenged him to hit the bullseye – everything changes.  You now gave him something to aim at, something to challenge his skills against, something to measure his progress with, and something that gives all of his effort – purpose.  All by adding in a simple target.
That’s what a goal does to a person’s life – It changes everything.  You were given a life and you’ve been told ever since to, “live it.‘  Well, in order to answer that question your first thought should be, “By doing what?”  And that is the key focusing question that sets the basis for this list!
Everybody in this world has a different set of circumstances, different set of skills, and a different set of opportunities through which they can interact with the world and find their unique sense of fulfillment.  You’re mission in life should be to figure out what your unique, “sets” are and how you can take action to best capitalize on them that gives all of your effort purpose and meaning.  Goals are the guiding light that get you there.
Take your time reading through the tid-bits below and reflect on the Challenges I’ve posted at the end.  They will help you understand the power of goal setting, encourage you to focus your aim, and hopefully motivate you to create some clear targets that you can take flight towards achieving!  …Starting Today!  Enjoy :)

Application Exercises:

———— ———— ————
Level 1 Challenge:  Take some time right now to reflect on some of your goals in the past.  Think about some of your past New Year Resolutions that you never saw through to the end and some of the resolutions that you actually found success with and/or adopted as part of your lifestyle.  Think about some of your ‘fed up‘ moments when you resolved to make lifestyle changes for the better because you were sick of feeling or acting a certain way and maybe ended up simply falling back to your old ways after a few short weeks.  Once you have a few of these examples in mind, think about how you set those goals and why you achieved some goals but not others.  What factors contributed to that?  Use the SMART acronym below to help guide your thoughts and provide you with some valuable insight that can change the way you set all of your goals in the future!
smart goal setting conceptS – Specific: Be clear and unambiguous when setting your goal. Don’t leave room for guessing.
M – Measurable: Set a goal that allows you measurement toward your goals progress.
A – Attainable: Ask yourself, “Is this realistic and attainable?” If not, back to the drawing board.
R – Relevant: Create a goal with importance and meaning. Make sure the effort is worth it to you.
T – Time-bound: Commit to a deadline. Open-ended goals tend to go forgotten.
Level 2 Challenge:  Follow the same principles discussed above and set one SMART and focused goal that you can commit to achieving whole-heartedly.  Then, make sure you put it in a place where you can be reminded of it every day.  For example, you could turn your goal into a poster and place it on your bedroom wall, or you could make your goal your smartphone background, or you could put your goal on your work desk – anywhere that you will see it often.  Finally, try and tell somebody what you’re doing and tell them to hold you accountable.  The power of accountability can never be overemphasized.  When you have somebody to report to, you will be much more likely to push through on days when you don’t feel like it and resultantly, see your goals through to the end!
Level 3 Challenge:  Set two SMART goals and inspire three other people to set a SMART goal of their own!  Life has a lot to do with connection and the more you interact with the people within your circle of influence and do interesting things with, the more fulfillment that you are all going to find together!  It’s the principle of Synergy.  When you work together with another person the result isn’t doubled but exponentially increased!  Who can you think of that might need some help setting goals?  Who do you know of that always talks about change but never really does anything about it?  What goals can you think of that might be of common interest to people in your circle?

Goal is motivation and destiny.

Long-term goal:
I wish I could become a specialist doctor by the time I am 35 years old and publish my research on medical field!

Short-term goal:
Goal 1: Straight A* for my A-level
Goal 2: Get scholarship and enter IMU
Goal 3: Graduate from medical school
Goal 4: Pass medical housemanship
Goal-5: Pass Specialist Examination

We fight and achieve our goal, no matter how we bleed and exhausted.

We only live once.

Review on Interpersonal skills

"We can bend a pair of chopsticks easily but when comes to a bundle of chopsticks, it would be very tough to be bend." This is how the saying goes. It is cliche, but it truly reflects the importance of interpersonal skills in a team when pursuing success. Everybody with different and special abilities could contribute to the team, and as a leader, we should understand team dynamics and mobilise the power of team. Leaders who give clear instructions, understand the problem of the members through conversations and balance the positions of each member in the team are able to bring them into one.
I believe I am lacking of this quality and I wish I could master interpersonal skills during my education in Taylor College.

Overview
Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) was created in 2007 to enhance university-level education to meet the ever- changing demands of industry, community and globalisation. TGC outlines the core knowledge, skills, abilities and qualities that students will develop at Taylor’s University regardless of their programme of study.

In a highly competitive and challenging 21st century workplace, graduates who are skilled will be relevant, responsive and work-ready to start ahead and stay ahead in the global marketplace.

A Taylor’s graduate who is equipped with TGC is not only readily adaptable to the changing workplace environment, but he/she also has the ability to take on new tasks and jobs successfully.

The teaching and learning approach at Taylor’s University is focused on ensuring that each student is able to acquire and demonstrate discipline-specific knowledge, cognitive capabilities and soft skills.

Impact on students
Every effort to instill TGC, whether in academics or extra-curricular activities, is significant in helping our students cultivate the competencies they need to be competitive in the working world upon graduation.

Academics in each school are responsible for embedding TGC in their teaching and learning activities. This is implemented at the module and programme levels through curricular design that involves mapping learning outcomes in relation to TGC, assessing TGC achievement and tracking student development. Evaluation and review mechanisms will be enhanced through regular audits and curricular review processes.

The university’s Student Support Services instills TGC in students at the co-curricular and extra-curricular levels. There are many opportunities for development university-wide, such as opportunities for development university-wide, such as international collaborations, fairs, community service initiatives, sports and recreational activities, competitions, internships and other personal and professional development activities.

The Integrated Teaching and Life-long Learning Centre at Taylor’s (INTELLECT) will monitor the implementation of TGC, as well as provide support and develop resources for stakeholders within the university to drive the TGC plan to its fulfillment.

With their valuable real-world input, employers in our Industry Advisory Panel, as well as our alumni network and business partners from varied industries also have a key role in keeping our strategic plan relevant, current and grounded in industry expectations.

Our students are at the centre of this plan. It is our hope they will take responsibility for consciously developing their own graduate capabilities and learning to demonstrate those important capabilities through reflection, portfolios and ultimately, a TGC Award.
