Assignment 2

i) Sabah-bisaya, kedayan, iranun

Peranakan Society
Peranakan refers to the local born communities. The phrase is most commonly refer to the descendant of Chinese(straits Chinese) but there are also other peranakan as well such as Chitty.Peranakan Chinese and Baba-Nyonya are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the malay archipelago and British Malaya, which is current Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, between 15th and 17th centuries.


 Pantang larang Orang Melayu

1) Do not sew at dusk or your eyes will be blind.
    Reason: To protect the eyes as there is no sufficient light.
                  To ensure your hand will not hurt by the needle

2)Cannot abuse any animal, or the baby born will be disabled.
    Reason: Reduce the abuse of animal.

3) Pregnant woman cannot sit on the staircase.
    Reason: To prevent the mother from tripping and fall down the staircase and hurt the baby.



Chinese Pantang Larang
1) Cannot sweep the floor or throw rubbish during Chinese New Year as it is belived you will sweep away your fortune and luck.
Reason: Chinese should concentrate on celebrating Chinese New year and the cleaning should be done before the Chinese New Year.

2) Chinese are not allowed to wear black during festivals especially Chinese New Year because wearing black is said to invite bad luck.
Reason: Black is a dull colour and did not bring up the festive environment.

3) Chinese believes when you broke something like bowl or plate you will encounter bad luck.
Reason: Encourage Chinese to be careful when handling fragile item.




Indian Pantang Larang

1) When someone first visit them, the host should not let the visitor to do things like wash plates as it is believed to bring bad luck to the host.
Reason: the host should treat the visitor well when they come.

2) Indian cannot eat food in the dark place as the ghosts will share your food as well.
    Reason: Prevents them from eating other things

3) Indian cannot sharpen their pencil on both sides,it will cause the parents to have arguments.
    Reason: Worry that the sharp end of pencil may accidentally poke into their eyes or hand.
